    Would love y'all's feedback on podcasts: here's number #1 . Part of our plan for growing is for me to go on a series of increasingly popular podcasts. I feel great about doing relateful podcasts, but feel like I still need a lot of practice for UpTrust. here's the first one:

    Great job, Jordan! You ooze charisma. Loved: The point about X and FB having an unconscious incentive structure, and there being no bad guys is brilliant because it shifts energy away from finger-pointing that can be put toward making things better....

    This is a big update for me: 50 Niche Social Networks by the numbers. I used to think we were up against a graveyard of failed projects. There’s truth in that, but it obscures the vibrancy of the existing social media landscape:

    • There are 30 social networks most of us have never even heard of pulling in 500k+ monthly active users. This isn’t just a fluke - it’s solid proof that focused, community-driven platforms can thrive.
    • In addition to the standard dozen billion+ MAU Major Players (Facebook, Youtube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, WeChat; and .5 billion+ Snapchat, X, Pinterest, Spotify, Reddit, Quora)
    • plus the foreign heavyweights (Douyin, Kuaishou, QQ, Weibo)
    • there are also 19 pretty other huge platforms killing it

    This is testament to

    • The viability of focused, community-driven platforms.
    • The social media landscape is more diverse than it might seem
    • The success of niche platforms suggests there’s still room for innovation and growth in social media, especially for platforms that address specific needs or values that aren’t getting met by current platforms
    • One option we have is positioning UpTrust in a different category, we’re not directly competing with established giants but rather creating a new space—where our niche is nuanced conversation about cultural landmines that goes well, in addition to kickstarting the trust economy (instead of the attention economy). It’s not about how long we can keep you scrolling; it’s about creating real connections and actually making people’s lives better.

    Love this survey of platforms! A bit confusing that MAU and Total Users are mixed. Gives the false impression that some platforms are more active than they actually are. I’m more interested in MAU than Total, as that shows current aliveness....

    Left Media Bias bigger than i realized. No matter how you measure (print media, online, page views, paid subscribers, followers, etc) US media leans heavily left, to an extent that surprised me. Most ways I tried back-of-the napkin math have right + right-leaning news sources being below 10%… and even the most generous assessments that include lost of neutral/other outlets still have left + left-leaning above 50% (meaning 5:1 liberal to conservative is the lowest estimate i could find).

    Context

    The US is pretty evenly split in terms of the two major parties:
    > 45% of U.S. adults Republican-ish, 44% Democrat-ish Gallup 2022

    • Googling the top 25 most-subscribed news channels in the United States, and
    • Even the more left leaning LLMS can’t help but point out this as a fact of modern media.

    Takeaways

    • First, this gives me empathy for Republicans. Many American conservatives feel like the underdog, regardless of how much power or influence they yield, because in a very real way, they’re not represented in a substantial part of the public narrative making machine—the media—proportionally. The perception of bias is true despite their being popular conservative outlets with sizable audiences, and as a result the left has influence on public opinion.Impact on Public Trust (but also how come Republicans aren’t better at getting media subscribers?)

    • Second, how come Republicans, who are stereotypically thought of us as having more business acumen or money or something, are getting so handily beaten in the media?

    • Third, I try not to get involved in politics because I’m scared of loosing connection or turning people off of the value of relatefulness because of my takes, even if they’re nuanced. We’re very good at otherizing people and forgetting to look at nuances. I’m certain I lack nuance. I don’t want a difference of political opinion to get in the way of our connecting. I started writing up this for the TTT email (which I ended up deciding not to send) but I realized others are deeply esconced in politics and way smarter and more educated in the field than I, so I decided to not go there. But here on uptrusting.com I think it’s a cool opporutnity to test; could also be a nice road to empathy, or self-empathy, depending on our identifications.

    We need new gender categories, while preserving the distinctness of "man" and "woman". I don’t mind using different pronouns—I’m happy to love someone with whatever language they prefer.

    But I’d like to propose that deconstructing traditional genders is not only unnecessary, it’s harmful.

    Not necessary

    • It’s not necessary because we’re free to create as many new genders as we’d like, while preserving the standard ones.

    • This is the transcend and include approach, as far as I can tell. The current approaches I’ve seen are either all transcend (reject the historical categories) or all include (reject the creativity and proof-by-existence of new genders).

    • I believe this will better honor the person who was misassigned a gender at birth, because their life experience is very different from someone who was assigned the gender they identify with. Eg: if I’m a trans-woman, I didn’t grow up with all the social pressures of being a woman, or going through a menstrual cycle, or whatever; I grew up feeling like a woman but getting the social pressures of being a man, going through the hormonal changes associated with male-body-ness. Which is a totally unique experience, that I will find more belonging and support from other people like me, not from trad-females.

    Harmful

    • It’s harmful because the people who want acceptance into the traditional category are never going to get it. Eg: If i’m a trans-woman, I was assigned male at birth, and I probably have some male parts and hormones and stuff, so when I try to identify as a woman and join in those discussions and groups that are for women I’m likely to always feel outside, different, and to a certain group of cis-women, threatening.

    • This further divides society and polarizes certain populations against including the reality of the trans-experience, which then polarizes the trans-supporters, which begets the vicious cycle.

    • Sex differentiation started around 1.2 billion years, so the male-female experience has ancient roots that are in our bodies and impacting us every single second. Denying this altogether is destroying massive chesterotn fences— denies tons of wisdom that is passed down not only culturally over the past 200,000 years, but instinctually for a billion.

    What about bathrooms and sports?

    Instead we can just have single stall bathrooms and locker-rooms. Or trad-male, trad-female, and a third for whoever of whatever gender, which is much larger than the trad lockerrooms and bathrooms. We can have a third category of sports—all gender. We’re creative, we’re growing, we have plenty of people to populate them and who will want to win, why stick with a binary?

    I’m sure I’m missing something, and I apologize to the new-gendered people who I’m sure I’ve insulted or missed somehow. But, leaning in to potentially contentious convo…

    Further, I’d like to claim that JK Rowling was a trans-advocate and the trans community made a huge mistake in not embracing her, because she is a beautiful bridge between two poles. This is partially due to social media, and something we believe UpTrust will fix....

    I would guess that a similar left-leaning bias exists in most social media, at least as far as the creators, maintainers and supervisors/police-ers/enforcers of those platforms go. I guess this one would be harder to prove with stats though....
